In programare, comentariile au un rol foarte bine determinat si foarte util, de altfel. Ele sunt folosite pentru explicarea codului scris. Utilitatea folosirii comentariilor se observa cel mai bine la dezvoltarea aplicatiilor mari. Fisiere care cu mii de linii de cod, care nu sunt comentate, sunt practic imposibil de citit si inteles ulterior. Iar daca am dori sa modificam un astfel de fisier misiunea noastra ar fi aproape imposibila.

PHP-ul permite 2 tipuri de comentarii:

- comentarii pe o singura linie ( folosite, in general, pentru o scurta detaliere a codului respectiv, sau pentru a indica inceputul sau sfarsitul unui modul). Acestea sunt cele mai utilizate si se utilizeaza de obicei in scrierea scripturilor de dimensiuni mici si medii, scripturi care nu impun descrierea algoritmului folosit.

- comentarii pe mai multe linii ( se folosesc atunci cand este necesar prezentarea algoritmului folosit sau o detaliere pe larg a codului). Astfel de prezentari ale algoritmului folosit sunt utile pentru modificarile ulterioare.

1) Comentarii pe o singura linie

Pentru a comenta o singura linie PHP foloseste 2 etichete: // sau #. Ele sunt inserate la inceputul liniei si tot ce urmeaza acestor etichete pana la finalul liniei vor fi interpretate ca fiind comentarii.

2) Comentarii pe mai multe linii

Pentru comentarii pe mai multe linii se pot folosi etichetele: /* si respectiv */. Prima va marca inceputul comentariului, iar cea de a doua va marca sfarsitul acestui comentariu. Acest tip de comentarii sunt folosite in general pentru aplicatiile foarte mari, cu algoritmi complecsi sau aplicatiile de tip Open Source
